Careers
At Harris Rainham Sixth Form, we are dedicated to equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to make informed decisions about their future careers. Our comprehensive careers programme ensures that students aged 16-18 are fully prepared for higher education, apprenticeships, or direct entry into the workforce.
Year 12 Careers Programme
In Year 12, students focus on exploring their interests and laying the groundwork for their career aspirations. Key activities include:
- Identifying Career Pathways: Students begin by reflecting on their interests and potential career options to shape their future plans.
- Career Pathway Sessions: Workshops introduce students to a variety of options, including university, apprenticeships, and employment.
- National Interview Week: Students gain valuable experience by participating in a formal interview with a professional, helping to develop their confidence and interview skills.
- Work Experience: Students are encouraged to independently secure and complete a week-long work placement, providing hands-on exposure to their chosen fields and fostering initiative.
- Discover London Event: A visit to the Excel Centre connects students with further education providers, employers, and industry professionals, broadening their horizons and inspiring future goals.
Year 13 Careers Programme
Building on the foundations set in Year 12, the Year 13 programme focuses on readiness and refinement:
- Professional CV Writing: Students develop a tailored CV that highlights their skills and aligns with their career aspirations.
- Group Interview Skills: Sessions prepare students for collaborative interview scenarios, a common feature in modern recruitment processes.
- Career Exploration: Further targeted sessions ensure students understand various career pathways and are well-prepared for life beyond sixth form.
Provider access legislation
Harris Rainham Sixth Form is fully compliant with the Provider Access Legislation (Baker Clause) by ensuring that students have meaningful opportunities to learn about a wide range of education, training and career pathways. Our careers programme includes encounters with employers and training providers, such as a guest speaker from Astro Technology Group who discusses careers in technology, engineering, recruitment and public relations, and a specialist assembly and workshops delivered by AIM Group, focusing on apprenticeships, how to find them, and how to succeed in applications. Students have also benefited from insights into professional services careers through a speaker from Ernst & Young, and are invited to take part in an employer visit to KPMG. These activities ensure that all students can access impartial information about academic, apprenticeship and employment routes, enabling them to make well-informed decisions about their next steps.
A Progressive Approach
Our careers programme is designed to evolve with the needs of our students:
- In Year 12, the emphasis is on exploration, self-discovery, and foundational skill-building.
- In Year 13, the focus shifts to refining skills and ensuring students are fully prepared for their next steps, whether in education or employment.
At Harris Rainham Sixth Form, we are committed to supporting every student in achieving their ambitions. Through a robust and engaging careers programme, we aim to provide the tools, experiences, and guidance necessary for a successful and fulfilling future.
