Guilds

Guilds

The guilds are the competitive elective pathway which specifically support students into specific careers, alongside providing them with the knowledge, opportunities and experiences which will allow them to compete at the upper most levels.

The guilds provide students with an amazing array of knowledge and ideas both to inform their UCAS applications and to enliven any university interviews that they might be fortunate enough to be invited to. They are also interesting on their own terms and are often the intellectual and cultural highlights of many students’ weeks.

As part of this offer, we will have three competitive academic guilds, specifically supporting students into careers in the following areas:

  • Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV)
  • Maths, Engineering and Physics (MEP)
  • Diplomacy, Law & Legislation (DLL)

Year 12 students will have an opportunity to apply for the guilds in the Autumn term and receive personalised support which will include:

  • Specific and personal seminars delivered by experts in the field
  • Workshops delivered by experts
  • Virtual/online coaching meetings once per term
  • Workplace visit

Early UCAS entry and support with personal statement and applications.

Preparation for any university entry tests (Eg UKCAT, BMAT - medicine, Admission exams - Oxbridge)

Mock university interviews by experts in the field

Guild overview:

Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV) - Click HERE (already on the page) to try some aptitude tests looking at verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning and situational judgement from the UCAT assessments.

Overview of guild

The aim of this course is to prepare students for, and give them the best chance of achieving their chosen pathway into a medical related profession. There are four strands…

1. To provide an overview of current topics related to Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Nursing etc.

2. To facilitate discussions on a range of related ethical issues.

3. To improve Interview skills as students prepare for interview.

4. To prepare students for Clinical Aptitude Tests that they will need to do at the end of year 12.

End points

Students will be more informed about the roles, responsibilities and ethical issues surrounding their medical career.

They will be better prepared for the application process; Personal Statement, Interview, CATS etc.

Where relevant to the course they are applying for, they will be able to access and become successful at the CAT examination and attaining an average of 700 (or higher).

Maths, Engineering and Physics (MEP)

Overview of guild

The aim of this course is to prepare students for, and give them the best chance of achieving, their chosen pathway into a maths related study or role. There are 3 strands:

1. To provide students with problem solving experience outside of that gained during subject lessons, equipping them for problem solving faced in interviews and entrance exams.

2. To gain experience and confidence in a range of interview situations.

3. To provide experiences which enhance their competitive profiles.

End points

Students will be well equipped with when they come to write personal statements.

Students gain experience in discussing challenging problems with other high achieving students, allowing them to compete with their independent school peers.

Students understand the nature of university entrance exams and are well experienced in the style of question.

Students are confident in interview situations and have a range of skills which allow them to succeed in group and individual interviews.

Diplomacy, Law & Legislation (DLL) - exploring national and international political systems and the understanding and functioning of legal and justice systems.

Overview of guild

The purpose of the guild is to offer a competitive enrichment for our students who are pursuing social studies and literature-based subjects, comparative to those guilds which are focused on the sciences. This will enable our students to develop their competitive profile and develop their holistic experience of sixth form. The themes covered in this guild closely reflect the principles underpinning the HRSF Sixth Form Charter, which we embed through every aspect of our school life.

This guild will likely appeal most to students who wish to pursue careers in law, politics, the civil service, academia, journalism, charity work, social care or other service-related professions etc.

End points

Students will develop civic awareness of their duties as a citizen and understanding of how the democratic processes of the country work.

Students will develop compassion, empathy and critical thinking.

Students will develop written and oral communication, as well as non-verbal communication skills.

Students will recognise and challenge ‘single stories’ and stereotypes.
